What is the history of El Viejo Almacén?

The building where today operates The Old Warehouse It has its origins in the 18th century. Built around 1760 in the San Telmo neighborhood, it began as a general store during the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. Throughout the 19th century, it served multiple purposes: it was expanded, housed the former British Hospital, functioned as the National Customs House, and served as an aid center during the Paraguayan War.

Towards the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the building began to be linked to the cultural and bohemian life of the city. In 1969, the singer Edmundo Rivero definitively transformed it into a tango house, which would soon be known as the “Templo del Tango” (Temple of Tango). Since then, central figures of the genre such as Aníbal Troilo, Osvaldo Pugliese and Roberto Goyeneche have performed on its stage.

Over the decades, El Viejo Almacén has become one of the most emblematic tango bars in Buenos Aires and an international cultural reference point. It was visited by political, cultural and show business personalities from all over the world, and in 1982 it was declared a site of cultural interest by the City of Buenos Aires. After closing in the 1990s, it reopened and continued its activity as a gastronomic and artistic space, keeping alive a fundamental part of the history of Buenos Aires tango.
